White Nights by Urszula Honek US edition

Published by Two Lines Press, 2026

The US edition of Urszula Honek’s White Nights, which was longlisted for the International Booker Prize and shortlisted for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation in 2024.

“Translator Kate Webster, whose research for this book included immersing herself in Honek’s poems, has elegantly captured Honek’s unique blend of patience and poetic reflection poised at the very edge of the thinkable, almost (if not quite) hovering over the abyss. Webster also captures this central silence—paradoxically, perhaps, one of the toughest elements of a literary work to translate.” From the introduction to the US edition by Jennifer Croft

White Nights squirms with such relentless, unspecified anguish. A festering horror hangs over Binarowa, […] lurking everywhere but impossible to pinpoint. This pervasive dread, which terrorizes without ever being described, manifests Honek and Webster’s rare prowess; theirs is a virtuosity of silence.” From a review by Mandy-Suzanne Wong in Asymptote Journal, 16.02.26

“Honek’s prose remains playfully lyrical in Webster’s excellent translation, which also captures the inherent melancholy of the region.” From a review by Cory Oldweiler in the Los Angeles Review of Books, 10.02.26
